I know, I've been sucky at updating. It's a combination of feeling weird for cheating on you and not having a whole lot to say, because I'm going through a lot emotionally.
I want to maintain this blog though and catch up on reading all the blogs in my blogroll. So as a start, here's a brief run-down of what I've been up to:
It's the school holidays here in sunny South Africa. Schools in Cape Town closed on the 5th December or thereabouts (ok, I forgot, alright?) and I went on leave on the 12th.
My philosophy when looking after the kids allllll dayyyyy (seriously, how do stay-at-home moms do it?) is to do one Fun thing per day. As long as we can say we've done something Fun, then I can use all manner of threats by citing the Fun we've just had. Yes, I'm nasty that way.
Here's where we've been so far:
The Company's Gardens. The only place that can bring back my entire childhood in a matter of minutes. As you enter, you can buy a packet of peanuts to feed the squirrels. We didn't buy them, because Hannah's allergic (!), but it used to cost R2,00 per bag. I'm willing to bet it still costs close to that.
At the top of the Gardens, you have the South African Museum.
Here's where we saw cool dinosaur exhibits, listened to whale songs in the whale well, looked around the 2008 Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, and...
...saw Davy the Dragon. The Planetarium, also part of the Museum, had a show on for kids. Jonah lasted about 20 minutes before he started to get a bit hysterical. He didn't like the 'cary dragon'. Sheesh! Hannah and James loved him, though, and learned cool stuff like: if you screamed on the moon, no one would hear you, because there's no air to carry the sound.
We've also been to Fish Hoek beach and Dalebrook Tidal pool a couple of times. This was quite a feat for me. When I was young (whaha), I used to go to the beach every. single. day. of our 6 week December holiday. Then I met Scott and had children. Scott hates the beach, and my children had an aversion to pretty much anything to do with it too: the sand, the noise of the waves, the coldness of the water, the sun... Again I say: sheesh! Now that James and Hannah are a bit older though, they enjoy splashing in the waves and digging in the sand. Jonah pretty much still sits there and moans, but this holiday, he has gone as far as digging disconsolately, so I think we might be getting somewhere.
But wait, there's more:
We've also done Butterfly World. Which is lovely, but ridiculously humid. We managed to see not only butterflies, but also marmosets and a duiker. Apart from that, the saving grace from the humidity was the garden at the back, where you could sit under the shade, sip some juice and watch the ducks and the geese. Yay!
And last but not least, we went to the zoo. Jonah was desperate to see a 'zwebwa' and because he's overindulged, we drove the 40km or so to Tygerberg to see them. As it turned out, it was a great day for the zoo, because it wasn't too hot. We saw a bear doing his bear thing, lions doing their liony things and, well, you get the picture.
I think that's enough for now. More catching up soon.
I've been thinking about what to do about the cheating. If the mood takes me, I'll write up a short password-protected post and you can email me if you want to read what actually happened.

Your e-mail is not apparent on the site - did you intend it to be available?

Glad to read of the adventures you take the kids on. As opposed to me, who took my daughter to some new restaurants in town for some semi-fancy mom-daughter lunches on her days off. Its too cold here for anything outdoorsy, so that is my excuse!
